BorgWarner to supply permanent magnet motors to European light-duty vehicles

Europe’s light duty commercial trucks are geared up to use BorgWarner’s HVH250 internal permanent magnet motor (IPM), with production expected in 2023.

BorgWarner, the German e-mobility OEM, states that it has the capacity to produce 80,000 HVH motors per year. According to the announcement, each light duty truck will use two IPMs per e-axle. Benefits emphasised through the use of IPMs include improved efficiencies (>95%), helping meet zero-carbon targets, reduced noise, and low-speed torque advantages – all benefits linked to the use of rare earth permanent magnets, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB).

The typical loading of magnets per xEV drivetrain motor ranges from 1-3kg, depending on the size and configuration. With electric vehicle (EV) uptake soaring, even in the face of weak global economies, the outlook for e-mobility raw materials is accelerating. Using more efficient motors, allows automakers to optimise weight-cost-range specs of EVs, which became more apparent when Tesla switched from its name-sake induction motor to using permanent magnet motors, despite having previously acknowledged the supply chain risks linked to Chinese NdFeB market dominance. But in order to compete with a growing EV landscape, Tesla made the switch to help reduce battery costs.

While passenger vehicles are set to underpin the largest growth area, commercial vehicles are following suite, especially with company targets being put in place to meet net-Zero emission regulations. While battery technologies are mixing and matching chemical formulations, which will have significant upside and downside scenarios for raw material requirements, NdFeB magnets are, for now, the technology of choice in the drivetrain to convert the battery-stored energy into motion.
