A review of this week’s Fastmarkets Ferroalloys Conference in Prague.

Overall the mood at the FM Ferroalloys conference in Prague was more buoyant than many expected, with most agreeing that the outlook - even for Europe - is slightly brighter than was the case just six weeks ago.

While Europe faces a potentially challenging winter - underpinned by energy crisis, the war in Ukraine and inflation - thus far the combined impacts on the steel and ferroalloy sectors have not been too acute. 

Project Blue’s Jack Bedder gave a presentation exploring how energy transition will reshape the vanadium, manganese and cobalt supply chains.  To varying degrees, battery technologies are set to restructure these markets over the net zero horizon, and will, in all case, require new sources of supply to be brought to market.
