Terrafame and Renault agree nickel sulphate supply deal

Finnish multi-metal producer, Terrafame, and French automotive company, Renault, have signed a multi-year agreement for the supply of nickel sulphate for use in EV batteries.

The deal represents a continuation of the relationship between Terrafame and Renault. The two companies formed a collaboration in October 2021 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Terrafame produces nickel and cobalt sulphate at its Sotkamo plant in Finland as part of a fully integrated operation including its Talvivaara mine. Intermediate processing involves bioleaching to recover metals from concentrate to form Ni-Co mixed sulphide precipitate (MSP). Prior to constructing a nickel sulphate production line at Sotkamo in 2021, this MSP was sold to third-party processors of nickel sulphate.

Although neither company have provided specifics on the volumes involved, Terrafame states that the deal will provide Renault with nickel sulphate sufficient for over 200,000 EVs per year. Given its previous estimates that the plant is capable of producing enough nickel sulphate for 1M EVs annually, this implies that Renault is receiving approximately a fifth of Terrafame’s annual output.

With China and Indonesia dominating recent growth in battery-grade nickel production, Finland has positioned itself as an important hub for European OEMs to source alternative materials closer to home.
